Introducing CO2 to Your Indoor Grow

Some of the best knowledge we here at Mainely Hydro have gained over the years, and one of the most beneficial tips we can pass on to fellow green thumbs out there, lies in this simple phrase:

 The easiest and best way to maximize yield in your indoor grow is to increase O2 at the root structure and increase CO2 at the leaf.

This blog post reviews a Mainely Hydro cultivation endeavor to introduce CO2 into our blooming indoor grow space. Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming video, filming a discussion on The Benefits of CO2 Indoors, with Mainely Hydro co-founders.


1. Clear space of flammables & set-up your CO2 burner.

The very first step to re-introducing CO2 to our blooming indoor grow space was to clear the surrounding area. We rearranged a shelving unit, in addition to moving plant medium bags to ensure a clutter free environment.

We hung the automatic CO2 Burner from an existing hook secured into the ceiling. Next, we attached a propane tank (our fuel source) to the CO2 burner and plugged the burner into a nearby surge protected outlet.

We chose to mount an automatic fire extinguisher to the ceiling of our space, to ensure protection in case of fire. Mainely Hydro highly recommends introducing a fire extinguisher or similar fire suppression system to your indoor grow space.

2. Enclose your grow space.

To reap the benefits of CO2 in the grow space, you must ensure your space in enclosed. This also requires a split-air conditioning system, which can be costly so do your research! Do not try to skimp out and utilize a portable or window air conditioning unit. They will pull air in from the outside, rotating and depleting the CO2 levels you have been trying to increase in your grow space. A split-air conditioning system recirculates the air in the room only, so the CO2 always remains in the room.

In this demonstration we used Zipwall Zippers, as seen in the picture below, and Panda Film to create the final wall to enclose our space.


Each person stood on either side of the wall frame and rolled out the Panda Film which acts as our fourth wall. Once rolled out we cut the Panda Film to the size of the wall frame.

Ladders were needed to stretch and adjust the Panda Film which was then secured to the wall frame with staples using a standard staple gun.


3. Give your enclosed grow an entrance.

With the Panda Film up and acting as a barrier, we applied a zipper wall, as seen below, to provide an entrance. (Just to note, our space is additionally secured and locked by actual doors and walls and we highly suggest you equip your grow spaces the same!) First step to applying your zipper is to clean any dust or dirt off the section of wall you will applying your zipper to.  Once clean we lined up the zipper, one person holding the zipper at the bottom straight, the other removing the backing and applying pressure to the sticky-backed zipper. Once the zipper was securely applied, we cut through the Panda Film to finish our entrance.

4. Set up CO2 controller.

The final step in reintroducing CO2 into our bloom grow space, setting up a CO2 controller. This simple CO2 controller monitors the level of CO2 in the grow space. Our controller also has a relay incorporated to turn the burner on and off depending on the CO2 levels detected in the space. This additional step ensures CO2 does not exceed necessary levels, as well as allows you to monitor levels of ppms in your grow space.
